Snapdragon 820
For those not in the know, Project Tango is a Google initiative that seeks to bring specialized tech to smartphones that will allow them to have improved augmented reality capabilities. Although we had previously heard that Google was in cahoots with Movidius to bring Tango to the commercial market, Qualcomm has revealed that their technology will be what powers the Lenovo Phab 2 Pro, the first Project Tango device for the masses.
What’s more, Qualcomm is boasting that they’ve made improvements to their chips that enable them to run all the powerful functions of Tango with a less than 10 percent CPU overhead, compared to a normal app. Considering Tango employs three different cameras (an RGB camera, a tracking camera, and a depth sensor) while rendering live augmented reality on your phone’s display, this is a pretty impressive feat. Additionally, the company says that these computations are relatively easy on your battery life.
Snapdragon 820 Processor :
As one of the most cutting-edge mobile processors ever created, the Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ 820 processor with X12 LTE supports the ultimate in connectivity, graphics, photography, power and battery efficiency. See firsthand how we’ve designed the 820 from the ground up to be unlike anything else.Advanced Spectra Camera ISP :
The Snapdragon 820 harnesses the newest innovations in mobile photography to redefine today’s camera capabilities. Supported by the latest 14-bit image sensors, hybrid autofocus and multi-sensor fusion algorithms, the Spectra camera ISP captures a wider range of colors and supports computational photography. Plus, the Snapdragon 820 also has Hexagon 680 with HVX (Hexagon Vector eXtensions), which supports advanced imaging and computer vision.According to the leaked document, the SoC is looking at targeting devices that will be launched early 2016. The specs show that it will have the custom 64 bit Hydra CPU (no relation to S.H.I.E.L.D, for you comic book fans) and the A530 GPU, which will supposedly increase performance by 35% and 40% respectively. Switching from a 20 to 14nm FinFET manufacturing process will also be able to give your device a 30% power improvement.
The analyst who leaked the specs also said that the Snapdragon 820 will finally make its appearance in the upcoming Xiaomi Mi5, probably the Plus iteration. There were rumors that the Huawei-made Nexus, which will be coming out soon, will be powered by this, but the analyst shut down that rumor.
By the first and second quarter of next year, the source believes that other devices will follow suit in having the Snapdragon 820 SoC on their insides. We’ve previously heard rumors that the next flagship from Samsung, presumably the Galaxy S7, will also be powered by this. Qualcomm will be officially launching Snapdragon 820 by August 11 in Los Angeles.
